So Very Bored

Okay so the NWO hit the Stahley hideout but never fear, not a hair on their RTC head is harmed; they escape through a secret tunnel into a cave, while Shelly, playing the innocent bystander, does her best "They went that-a-way" bit to throw them off. But even they are smart enough to realize that the NWO (played by the three stooges) aren't going to be fooled for long.

Okay so the cave led to the Stahley hangar and that's where the YTF are now, hanging out and reading Token Jew's website. Y'know they can't be suffering much if they have internet connection.

Oh and Judd reflects. Basically he's beating himself up because ever since Bruce died, he hasn't been keeping up with his Bible studies. Of course, given the amount of shit that's happened since, I'm not surprised.

Token Jew's message isn't really that interesting except to say that his explanation for the natural disasters in the world is the old "Devil did it" even though in the same paragraph, he says that God gave Satan power over the weather so really it is God's fault. But he does declare that the recent quake was an Act of God and that he's trying to grab peoples' attention. I've already addressed all the things wrong with that, so I won't bore you by repeating myself.

Token Jew continues his message with a lot of saber-rattling, before Judd stops reading and starts watching TV. Apparently, Ellanjay, realizing that in the adult books they didn't do a good enough job of showing how the NWO is evil, start showing all the evil TV programs on the EBOWF network. One is a game show where the winner gets to murder the loser. Yawn, so Ellanjay's seen Running Man. Another show is basically Saw. Another show was a seance. Yeah, because a bunch of freaks around an Ouija board is gripping entertainment. And the last show before they tune out is a program teaching viewers how to cast spells on their enemies.

Meanwhile, Conrad is with Mr. Stein and Darrion and is trying to work on a plan to get them out. Naturally, Darrion decides to rack up another one for Jesus, using the old Liar-Lunatic-Lord strategy. Unfortunately it works. :wipes away a tear: Bye-bye to the formerly cool Mr. Stein.

Basically the YTF modify their cave and Mr. Stein and Conrad get Darrion out using a strategy that Mr. Stein admits he saw in a movie when he was younger, which works because everyone holds an Idiot Ball in Ellanjayland. The chpater ends with the YTF realizing the NWO has sent dogs after them.

If I were the NWO, I'd put up a bunch of "illegal" web sites talking about the Rapture, and geolocate the hell out of any visitors...

As Fred's pointed out, what's the virtue in bible study? (a) you've already said the Magic Words, and (b) you already know what's going to happen over the next seven years anyway!

Teaching viewers how to cast spells? Man, I've been seventh level for ages and I still haven't been taught the Real Power.

Pffft it's clear L&J have never watched MTV.Otherwise they'd no what real televised evil is.

What, not about being a bit of an ass to his fellow travellers and future wife? (I'm assuming by this point the series has made them a couple)

One is a game show where the winner gets to murder the loser.

So... the Hunger Games, then? *snerk*

Actually, in all seriousness, that bit about televised gladiatorial type games is probably meant to echo the Roman Empire, which had such games to entertain the populace. Given that the Roman Empire usually is the Big Bad in Christian historiography and is the "template" picture of a nation in decline, I can see why L&J decided on that.

And the last show before they tune out is a program teaching viewers how to cast spells on their enemies.

L&J seriously think magic is real? (O.o) I guess they assume that Satan's demons would be unleashed post the Rapture and supernaturally change the way humans interact with the energies of the universe or somesuch. \(>_>)/ *throws up hands, mind boggled*

Oh, so Mere Christianity in a nutshell. Way to assume the conclusion, L&J. Then again, they borrowed from CS Lewis's time-honored tradition.

Finally.... this?

You know, L&J have no idea how much of a jerk their version of God actually is. God is basically just treating the entire planet Earth and its human and nonhuman inhabitants as a huge SimEarth simulation. The conclusion is fore-ordained. The game has been programmed to cheat in favor of God, who just strings everybody along getting jollies over ticking off L&J's wonderful checklist.

I think Fred mentioned this in one of the LB posts. In a 'good cop/bad cop' kind of situation, the good cop's not really your friend, and the bad cop's not really out of control.

Cripes, I forgot about this site.

There are subtler ways to show the NWO programs are EVIL than assuming that the left behind are inexplicably interested in watching real murder, real torture, and seances.

What you do is have all the shows be anti-Christian propaganda. PBS or whatever kids' network broadcasts the NWO equivalent of that Nazi children's book about how Jews are poisonous mushrooms. The villains on the cop show are doubleplusungood terrorists who crucify innocent public servants. Even comedies can get in on it: the Casanova character is so indiscriminate, he'd even sleep with a Christian!

Indeed, rikalous. One of my favourite moments from a Reign of Steel campaign came when the PCs were watching television in the Washington Protectorate. There's a cop show on. One of the two leads is by-the-book; the other one's more of a maverick. They're taken off the case. Maverick goes off on his own to try to solve it... and By-the-Book turns him in to IA.

That sounds more like the golden days of Tucson Public Access TV.
