Bombs Away!

If it seems like I'm speeding through the first chapter, it's because nothing really happens. The kids worry about Bruce. Yawn. MEGO.

But the action finally picks up in the last part when the city is bombed. And the hospital where Bruce was staying while Ryan visited was bombed.

There really isn't much to snark on in these two chapters which make up the last of my book. For one thing, we have some genuine excitement for a change.

Basically what happened was the East Coast Militia launched an attack and the NWO followed up with a counter-attack. Again, for a militia they sure don't seem to know much about guerilla warfare as this kind of open assault was bound to be brutally crushed quickly. But again, as Firedrake reminds us in a previous comment, the American Militia movement isn't known for its brains.

Anyway we hear more from Carpathia as he says the words that Ellanjay thinks every eeevil pacifist utters:

It is no secret that I am, always have been, and always will be a pacifist. I do not believe in war. I do not believe in weaponry. I do not believe in bloodshed."

Again, it would be an interesting novel if Carpathia was a pacifist conned and forced into declaring war or if it pointed out his hypocrisy, but remember, Ellanjay thinks that all pacifists are wolves in sheep's clothing. No one could possibly, really be dedicated to ending war unless they had some sort of ulterior motive.

Anyway, the US Capital is destroyed, Heathrow is nuked, and Bruce Barnes is dead. That means I have to retire my "Bruce Barnes is Useless" tag. Pity. But from what I've heard, Token Jew takes over Bruce's job of exposition and shooting all sense of suspense in the head.

They find Mark alive near where the Milita base was and he is forced by Ellanjay to admit that Judd was right.

Oh, and finally someone expresses concern for Ryan. I would ask why they weren't immediately worried when he was missing but again, Ryan is the series' Butt Monkey second only to Hattie in terms of the abuse he receives from other characters.

And that's the end of books 5-8. Were they good? They were better than the adult books but again, that's like a kick in the gut being better than a kick in the teeth.

Sorry not to provide the finest snark, but there wasn't really much to make fun of. I'll let y'all take your best shot in the comments.

Wow. It's like trying to spork white noise. Good job.

I forgot to congratulate you last week for now being ahead of the adult series. Congrats!

Ironically, we've arrived at the Carpathia-the-false-pacifist speech at the same time that PBS is running a lot of true-life Martin Luther King Jr. and get-on-the-bus specials. Anyone else watching?

The NWO counter-attacked the militia? How did they decide where to attack?

In the films, Bruce died of a poisoned Bible. People wonder why I love the films.

A poisoned bible?! How the hell do you die from that?! This is me completely slackjawed.

It's an evil NWO plot to kill all the Christians. Because nobody else would want to have a Bible any more. Basically Nicolae's minions steal a load of Bibles, lace them with anthrax, and then distribute them to anyone who wants them (presumably as a fake organisation, I don't remember the details).

The films are gloriously bad in places.

I'm question this conclusion. First, several of the characters (e.g. Chaim Rosensweig) sincerely want peace. Second, it may be the case rather that, since L&J believe that the antichrist will come as a pacifist, they are (initially) suspicious of all who claim to seek peace.

Firedrake, you call that bad? It's brilliant! What better way to ensure that only devout Christians will get killed? Yeah, it sounds like something the Joker would do, but that just means you get to use the Trunchbull defense.

Is that presented as a good thing? So far, it appears Chaim has said a lot of things, none of which the audience is supposed to approve of.

The question is whether all apparent pacifists deep down really oppose peace. Chaim is portrayed as sincere, yet misguided. Presumably he is a true pacifist.

Yeah, but since Chaim never calls Carpathia on the gap between his words and actions, Ellanjay is certainly not saying pacifists are very bright.

A poisoned bible? Speaking of Umberto Eco, I wonder if somewhere in there is a dig by Ellenjay at The Name of the Rose, an altogether better piece of apocalyptic(-inspired) literature.

Of course, "pacifist" Chaim changes his tune when he thinks Carpathia has betrayed him and his people, and gets around to making The Sharpest Sword Ever. So much for pacifism.

Poor Chaim. I like pre-conversion-meta-Chaim so much. :(

Every once in a while I go on YouTube and check out the videos being put out by the Patriot movement. They're light on Che Guevera, but heavy on Red Dawn. Seriously messed up stuff. If there was ever going to be an uprising in the US, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it go a lot like what you're describing: Open warfare and suicidal attacks.

I just read through all your posts, and I have to congratulate you on your stick-to-itiveness. I wouldn't have been able to continue to read and snark about these books after so much numbing snarkworthiness.

A quick clarifying question on this section: did Bruce die in the bombing of the hospital? I wasn't sure.

Bruce did die in the bombing of the hospital.
