Like I said before, I'm somewhat embarrassed by my earlier ones (missed opportunities and typos) but hey, I was on a learning curve then.

The sad part is those names you listed...you're barely exaggerating, like at all. Especially when it comes to Jewish characters, who are so stereotypical that I find myself applauding that they aren't even more stereotypical. Because Ellanjay could have had them saying "Oy Vey!" or beginning all their sentences with "You want." Like "You want to torture us again? Oy Vey, again with the torturing..."Mousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11936002393931074811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7882696241406815138.post-6744873168055711422015-11-03T20:07:12.261-08:002015-11-03T20:07:12.261-08:00Just wanted to say that I recently found out about...Just wanted to say that I recently found out about your critiques via Slacktivist and have finally (over the course of many lunch breaks) got all caught up. I had flipped through these books in the drug store way back when they were on the shelf--I knew the writing was bad, but had no idea how pathological the theology of the LB was.

Anyway, of the many things that are wrong with the whole series, the thing that's sticking in my craw is this--why is this series still called "...:The Kids"? The main characters are only really minors for the beginning of the series. Also, one would think that going through massive, world-changing disasters would force the "kids" to age pretty quickly--sort of like how "teenagers" as a distinct age group didn't exist until times of relative prosperity. It seems weird to keep that in the title.

As I've been getting caught up, I've also been playing a little game with brainstorming stereotypical "ethnic" character names that Ellenjay may have missed:

--Paddy O'Shillelagh
--Bjorn Olaffson and his brother Sven
--Hans Von Wudenshue
--Llewelyn Llghhyyssshhysgh
--William Wallace III and his girlfriend Fiona McHaggis
--Aloha Poi
--Jambalaya Thibidaeux

I could go all day.

Anyway, thanks for the fun read!Abby Normalnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7882696241406815138.post-60712678912104739362015-11-03T04:23:47.194-08:002015-11-03T04:23:47.194-08:00I think it's cargo cult writing.
I mentioned ...I think it's cargo cult writing.

I mentioned this over at Heathen Critique a couple of hours ago, and it's even clearer here. Things happen because they are the sort of thing that happens in a story like this, not because they make any sort of sense. The Evil Dictatorship has to capture some of the Heroic Resistance Group, and then, well, stuff happens, and it's really dramatic!

And then this mystery meat has a load of RTCianity slapped down onto it (I can hear the "splatch" now) to fill in the gaps. Only it doesn't.Firedrakenoreply@blogger.com
